What is the tourism outlook?

The return of travel following the 2020 COVD pandemic has fueled growth expectations for Mexico's tourism industry. In anticipation of this rebound, the Mexican government has allocated 538 million pesos of development funds to the state of Sonora to improve tourism and strengthen the infrastructure for key cities such as Puerto Peñasco.

Expansion of Border and Driving Lanes
The funds will be allocated to expand customs at the border and increase the number of lanes in order for the state of Sonora to be able to handle double and up to triple the amount of tourism.

Upgrade to Airport
In addition, future plans are in the works to include more direct flights from/to Phoneix, AZ with plans to eventually include other cities such as Tucson, AZ. The city's long-term goal is to expand airport access and infrastructure to more cities.

Creation of a Cruise Home Port
With a recent study done in June 2022, Mexico top's the list in world ranking for cruise homeports as the cheapest country from a customer pricing perspective. The Mexican government will invest more to make Puerto Peñasco a home port for cruise ships to sail from. Cruise homeports will add significant tourism potential and will play another key role in improving Puerto Peñasco's local economy.
